NCQA recognition in the Back Pain Recognition Program

The National Committee for Quality Assurance, the Washington DC based premier quality reporting agency in all of health care, implemented the physician Back Pain Recognition Program in 2008. NCQA also has physician recognition programs for the management of diabetes and cardiovascular disease/stroke. The doctors of Rochester Chiropractic Group were among the first doctors in the country to achieve NCQA recognition in the care of back pain. NCQA recognition is a demonstration of high quality patient centered, evidence based care for patients with back pain.

Unity Hospital Spine Center

Unity hospital, formerly Park Ridge Hospital, has recently opened the Unity Hospital Spine Center for the evaluation and management of spine related pain and disability. The center includes spine surgeons, physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, anesthesiologists, neurologists, physical therapists, and the doctors of Rochester Chiropractic Group. Physicians in the community refer patients with spine related pain and/or disability to the center, where an intensive history is taken, records, reports and imaging are collected and reviewed by a spine center physician and the patient is sent to the appropriate spine center specialist. Patient care is coordinated to ensure the best and quickest recovery from spine related pain and/or disability.The Unity Hospital Spine Center is one of only spine centers in the country to include medical physicians, surgeons and chiropractors as part of the same center.

U of R School of Medicine Faculty

Rochester Chiropractic Group has served as a training facility for residents from the family medicine program of the University of Rochester School of Medicine from 1999 through 2013.  First year residents in family medicine would spend 3 - 4 days in the office with Dr John Ventura learning about the chiropractic approach to musculoskeletal conditions such as back pain and neck pain. Dr Ventura served as a clinical instructor at University of Rochester and  is one of  few members of the chiropractic profession who served as faculty members at a medical school.

New York Chiropractic College and D'Youville College

Rochester Chiropractic College served as a training site for interns from New York Chiropractic College, and has also hosted interns from Palmer Chiropractic College. Interns could spend up to 8 weeks at the end of their internship working directly with the doctors of Rochester Chiropractic Group, both observing and assisting in patient care. Dr Ventura was an assistant professor at New York Chiropractic College and also supervised chiropractic interns at the Mercy Outreach Center. He currently teaches chiropractic students at D'Youville College

Mercy Outreach Center

The doctors of Rochester Chiropractic Group have served as volunteer health care staff of the Mercy Outreach Center for over 20 years. The Mercy Outreach Center is a multidisciplinary center with medical physicians, surgeons, dentists, nurse practitioners, physicians assistants, social workers, nurses and chiropractors. The providers work collaboratively to care for those without health insurance.

Board Certified in Orthopedics and Sports Medicine

Dr Ventura is board certified chiropractic orthopedists. Dr Desandis is certified as chiropractic sports practitioner. The doctors of Rochester Chiropractic Group have taken extensive post graduate training to remain current in patient centered, evidence based care.

Published in Scientific Journals and Texts

Dr Ventura has published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, the first chiropractic scientic journal referenced in Index Medicus.  Dr Ventura is co-author in a text on sociology of medicine. Dr Ventura has published numerous articles on managed of spine related disorders in Becker's Spine Review, and online magazine for spine professionals.

Primary Spine Practitione 

Trained The doctors of Rochester Chiropractic Group have recently undergone an intensive post graduate training program as Primary Spine Practitioners. The training program was sponsored by Excellus BC/BS and taught by Primary Spine Provider Network, LLC. The program added to the knowledge and skills of the doctors to provide the most patient centered, evidence based care possible for their patients.

Consultants to Insurance and Industry

The doctors of Rochester Chiropractic group provide independent medical examinations as second opinions to several insurance companies. They have also served on the advisory committees to Excellus BC/BS. The doctors have worked on local and national guideline committees to write clinically effective, cost effective strategies to manage back pain.

USBJI | NQF | CMS

Dr Ventura currently serves on the board of directors of the United States Bone and Joint Initiative (USBJI). USBJI is 'an organization of organizations,' whose mission is to improve quality of life and reduce the burden of musculoskeletal disease, with representatives from American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Arthritis Foundation, American Academy of Pediatrics,  American Physical Therapy Association and many others. Dr Ventura is the representative to USBJI from American Chiropractic Association. 

He also serves on the musculoskeletal standing committee of the National Quality Forum (NQF). NQF, based in Washington DC, works to improve all aspects of health care by endorsing standards to measure the quality of care delivered for health care providers, for hospitals and for health care organizations, such as NCQA and CMS. 

For the past 3 years Dr Ventura has served on a technical expert panel for Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Medicare continuually seeks to improve the quality of care delivered to Medicare beneficiaries, and one way of accomplishing this is to measure different aspects of the care. CMS has convened many technical expert panels to define and implement these quality measures.
